متن کاملHenipaviruses: emerging paramyxoviruses associated with fruit bats.
Two related, novel, zoonotic paramyxoviruses have been described recently. Hendra virus was first reported in horses and thence humans in Australia in 1994; Nipah virus was first reported in pigs and thence humans in Malaysia in 1998. Human cases of Nipah virus infection, apparently unassociated with infection in livestock, have been reported in Bangladesh since 2001. Species of fruit bats (gen...
متن کاملDonovanosis in Papua New Guinea.
Clinical and epidemiological observations on 87 cases of donovanosis seen at Port Moresby General Hospital are presented, with detailed reports of three cases in which the disease was more severe. The circumstances of infection described were consistent with venereal transmission. Chloramphenicol and gentamicin were effective in curing the disease, while streptomycin was found to be ineffective...
متن کاملPrevalence of Henipavirus and Rubulavirus Antibodies in Pteropid Bats, Papua New Guinea
To determine seroprevalence of viruses in bats in Papua New Guinea, we sampled 66 bats at 3 locations. We found a seroprevalence of 55% for henipavirus (Hendra or Nipah virus) and 56% for rubulavirus (Tioman or Menangle virus). Notably, 36% of bats surveyed contained antibodies to both types of viruses, indicating concurrent or consecutive infection.
متن کاملLeadership in Papua New Guinea
The unique context and challenges of leadership in Papua New Guinea are not adequately explained by the extant literature. This paper investigates the context of, and barriers to leadership, in Australia’s closest northern neighbour, as PNG attempts to actively participate in a dynamic, rapidly changing global environment. Historically, PNG is a diverse Nation of tribal societies organised on t...
